Loving What God Says

Love of God’s Word is essential in loving God. It is impossible to truly love someone whom you do not love what they say. God has initiated a loving relationship with us that is given to us through His Word. It is through His Word that we are told how we can be part of the relationship God desires with us. Sin is what keeps us from this relationship, but it is God’s Word that helps us to overcome that separation. In Psalm 119:9-11 it says, “How can a young man keep his way pure? By living according to your word. I seek you with all my heart; do not let me stray from your commands. I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.” In the New Testament we learn that the Word of God is our offensive weapon to defend off temptation and to help others to overcome temptation. It is the sharp two-edged sword that pierces the heart of men. It is always leading us back to an intimate, loving relationship with God.
Because of these things we must be careful in our study and use of God’s Word. Paul told Timothy, “Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved …who correctly handles the word of truth.” (2 Timothy 2:16). When we are faithful in our use of God’s Word we are promised in Isaiah 55:11, “so is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.”
